Benni McCarthy signs for Manchester United as the First Team Strikers Coach!!
McCarthy, who is still Bafana Bafana’s record goalscorer, is no stranger to the English Premier League having played for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham. During his time at Rovers, he had been linked to a possible move to the club he supported, United (and Chelsea)
He began his playing career at Seven Stars in Cape Town, and after a short stint at Cape Town Spurs, he moved to Ajax Amsterdam, before playing in La Liga with Celta Vigo. From Celta he went to Portugal where he became a UEFA Champions League winner with Porto and Jose Mourinho, before the move to Rovers.
He finished his playing career with Orlando Pirates back in South Africa, before becoming a coach, starting with a stint as assistant at Belgian club Sint-Truidense.
His first head coach role was at Cape Town City, where he also won his first silverware, winning the MTN8 trophy in his second season.
His last role was at AmaZulu also in the DStv Premiership, but despite leading the club to a second-place finish, and taking the club to the group stages of the CAF Champions League on their debut, he was dismissed earlier this year.
