Home Affairs Extends Hours to Help Voters Avoid ID Hurdles

South Africans who still need identity documents to vote will have additional opportunities to visit Home Affairs before the local government elections.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has announced extended operating hours on 2 and 3 November, with offices scheduled to open from 8am until 6pm. On election day, Wednesday, 4 November, offices will open at 7am and close at 9pm.

The extended hours are intended to help eligible voters collect outstanding identity documents, submit ID applications or obtain temporary identity certificates where applicable.

The department is also urging people who have already applied for their identity documents to collect them before heading to the polls. Community leaders and local structures have been asked to encourage eligible residents to make sure their documentation is in order.

The timing is significant because voters must present an acceptable identity document at their voting station. According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), acceptable documents include the smart ID card, the green barcoded ID book or a valid temporary identity certificate.

A driver’s license, passport or photocopy of an identity document will not be accepted as identification for voting.

For voters who have left ID collection until the last minute, the extended hours could make the difference between arriving prepared and encountering a documentation problem at the polling station.

The announcement places renewed focus on a practical part of election readiness: being eligible to vote is not enough if the required identification is missing.

With polling day approaching, Home Affairs is encouraging voters to act early, check their documents and use the additional operating hours where necessary.

The message is straightforward: confirm your ID is ready before election day, rather than discovering a problem when it is time to cast your ballot.
