Morocco’s remarkable journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash at Monterrey Stadium, Mexico, in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Atlas Lions kept Africa’s hopes alive, showing tremendous resilience after falling 1-0 behind in the second half. Just when it appeared they were heading for elimination, Morocco produced a stoppage-time equaliser before holding their nerve in the penalty shootout to book a place in the Round of 16.
Morocco were the brighter side throughout the opening half and created the better scoring opportunities. Neil El Aynaoui forced Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into a superb save with a close-range header, while Achraf Hakimi rattled the crossbar with a thunderous strike. Ismael Saibari also squandered a glorious chance just before half-time as the teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
The Netherlands eventually broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Cody Gakpo calmly finished to put the Dutch within touching distance of the Round of 16.
With time running out, Morocco refused to surrender. In the first minute of stoppage time (90+1), defender Issa Diop rose highest to power home a header and send the match into extra time, stunning the Dutch supporters.
Neither side could find the winner during the additional 30 minutes, although Morocco looked the more dangerous team while the Netherlands struggled to create clear-cut chances.
The contest was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero with a crucial save before Ismael Saibari converted the winning penalty to seal a 3-2 shootout victory.
The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada on July 4. It also strengthens Africa’s impressive showing at the tournament, with the Atlas Lions continuing the fearless form that has made them one of the continent’s strongest representatives on the global stage.
In the other Round of 32 matches, Paraguay stunned Germany by winning 4-3 on penalties after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw. Brazil also secured a place in the Round of 16 after coming from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 in another thrilling encounter.
