Sixteen countries have seen their FIFA World Cup dreams come to an early end after failing to qualify for the inaugural Round of 32 at the 2026 tournament.

While 32 teams booked their places in the knockout phase, another 16 nations were left to reflect on missed opportunities after the group stage concluded.

Biggest disappointments

Among the biggest disappointments were Czech Republic, who collected just one point in Group A after a draw with South Africa and defeats to South Korea and Mexico.

South Korea, despite beating the Czech Republic in their opener, missed qualification after a narrow defeat to South Africa and failed to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Hosts Mexico and South Africa advanced from Group A, with Bafana Bafana making history by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time.

Other teams eliminated were Qatar, Scotland, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, Iran, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Panama.

Impressive performances

Some nations exited despite producing impressive performances during the group stage, highlighting just how competitive the expanded 48-team tournament has become.

Several of the eliminated sides pushed heavyweight opponents all the way but were ultimately undone by narrow defeats, goal difference or results elsewhere.

Hopes were dented

In terms of Africa, nine of the 10 teams to have qualified reached the Round of 32 – a remarkable achievement. Only Senegal missed out on reaching the knockout stages.

Likewise, Asian hopes were dented following the eliminations of Qatar, Iran, Iraq and Jordan, while South Korea’s exit came as one of the biggest surprises after opening the tournament with a victory.

Attention now turns to the Round of 32, where the remaining teams will battle for places in the last 16 as the race to lift football’s biggest prize intensifies.
