Ninety minutes stand between disappointment and glory as South African football fans eagerly await Bafana Bafana’s historic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash against co-hosts Canada on Sunday evening.

The stage is set for an epic showdown as coach Hugo Broos leads his troops against Canada at the Los Angeles Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 9pm (SA time). The encounter is expected to attract millions of viewers across the globe as South Africa looks to continue its dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana made history on Wednesday by qualifying for the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time after edging South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey, Mexico. Thapelo Maseko’s decisive goal secured South Africa’s place in the Round of 32 and sparked celebrations across the country.

Despite already achieving a historic milestone, Broos insists his side is not satisfied and believes they have what it takes to overcome the tournament co-hosts.

«”I think we can say that the World Cup has already been a success for us. Everybody in South Africa expected and hoped that we would be in the second round, and we are in the second round. This is important, but again that doesn’t mean that we are happy and that we just play the game tomorrow and go home. We want more and we want to win the game tomorrow,” said Broos.»

Defender Ime Okon echoed his coach’s confidence, saying the players are determined to build on their success.

«”It is a historic moment for us as a country. We are just really happy and excited, and if we can keep going then we will. We must just keep working hard and look forward to the next game,” said Okon.»

The team has also received a vote of confidence from SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan, who praised the squad for their remarkable achievement.

«”We will continue the fight on Sunday. Bafana Bafana have already reached unprecedented heights,” said Jordaan.»

«”This team has worked hard to reach new heights, and we can surpass the previous milestones. To coach Hugo Broos and the entire team, you can emerge from this match as new champions in the hearts of our people.»

«”We are solidly behind you, and we believe in all of you. All the best.”»

Bafana Bafana finished second in Group A with four points, behind group winners Mexico, who claimed a perfect nine points.

South Africa opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico before earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Czechia. They then sealed their historic qualification with a 1-0 victory over South Korea to book a place in the knockout stages.

Now, with history already made, Broos and his players have another opportunity to write an even greater chapter by defeating Canada and reaching the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
