Cardoso Claims Some Chiefs Stars Arrived Drunk

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has claimed that certain players would arrive drunk at training at Naturena.

Cardoso, 33, is one of the nine players Chiefs released as they attempt revamp and refreshen their squad under new head coach Arthur Zwane and Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Junior.

The former Free State Stars defender, who is currently a free agent and looking for a new club, was speaking to Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide, admitting the players and the club should’ve done more to raise the quality and expectations within the squad.

“I think we just let things slide too much,” he said on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“Like you said, the ‘old school Chiefs’, a player comes there under the influence [of alcohol], they would kick his ass and they would tell him to get back in his car and go back home.

“I think with us and this generation, we’re a bit too soft. We let things slide and it starts building up. When player has an outburst, it becomes a problem.”

When asked whether the ‘drunk ones’ were allowed to carry on, Cardoso responded: “They were allowed to carry on, they would get a warning and a bit of a talking to and a week later it’s back to normal.”

Cardoso also questioned Chiefs transfer policy over recent years, saying the club signed players who didn’t care enough about the badge.

“I think the biggest downfall over the seven years that I’ve been there, is you see players come in and go out six months to a year [later],” he explained.

“I think sometimes the quality of signings that do come to Chiefs, you’re bringing NFD players, you’re bringing in free agents. I mean they’re passionate to play but some players just want to earn a salary.

“You can see it on the field, you can see who wants to play. Some players just arrive under the influence of alcohol because they don’t care. That was the biggest affect that we had at Chiefs over the few years that I’ve been there.”
