Emalahleni Mourns the Loss of Veteran Public Servant, Councillor Jerry Patric Djiana

The Emalahleni Local Municipality is in mourning following the tragic passing of veteran public servant and Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor, Jerry Patric Djiana, who passed away on Wednesday after a short illness.

In an official statement released on October 22, 2026, the municipality expressed deep sadness, describing Djiana as a “dedicated public servant, respected leader and valued member of our municipal family.”

Born on July 20, 1971, Djiana dedicated over a decade of his life to advancing local government infrastructure and community representation in the region.

In 2011 he was elected as the Ward Councillor for Ward 6, initiating his lengthy tenure of service.

In 2016 he was appointed as a Proportional Representation (PR) Councillor and named Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Technical Services. During this period, he also served with distinction as Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC). Between 2024 and 2026 he took on the role of MMC for Development Planning, a portfolio he managed dynamically until his untimely passing.

“He was more than a councillor who held various positions,” the Communication Unit of the municipality shared. “He was a colleague, a leader and a human being whose presence and contribution touched the lives of those who had the privilege of working alongside him.”

The leadership noted that his departure leaves a profound structural and emotional void across Council and the broader local community. On behalf of the Executive Mayor, Council, administration and municipal staff, the municipality extended heartfelt condolences to Djiana’s family, close friends and colleagues.

The statement concluded with a message of solace: “May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
