American singer Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, popularly known as Doja Cat, will be making her South African debut as the headliner for the Global Citizen concert in March. What is her relationship with South African father Dumisani Dlamini?
DOJA CAT TO MAKE SOUTH AFRICAN DEBUT
American singer Doja Cat announced that she will be headlining the Global Citizen Concert, scheduled to take place in Pretoria on 20 March. The singer expressed that she is excited to come to South Africa. This comes after she was meant to make her South African debut at the Hey Neighbour Festival 2025.
The festival was originally scheduled for August and later moved to December. However, the festival was thereafter cancelled due to funding challenges. So, Doja Cat did not come to South Africa.
“Hi everybody, I am so excited to announce that I am finally going to SA and meeting my fans in Rwanda. I am working with Global Citizen and Move Afrika,” she said.
“This isn’t just an opportunity to tour and play music. It is going to help people find jobs and create opportunities that last, so I am very, very happy to be part of something that is more than just music. I can’t wait to see you guys mcwaaah!,” she continued.

WHAT IS HER RELATIONSHIP WITH SOUTH AFRICAN FATHER?
Doja cat was raised by her mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer. Her father is South African actor Dumisani Dlamini, he shot to fame after appearing in the 1992 film Sarafina! alongside Whoopi Goldberg.
Sawyer and Dlamini had a brief relationship before splitting. Doja Cat and her older brother, Raman Dalithando Dlamini, grew up with their mother in New York and California, according to People. Doja Cat previously expressed that she didn’t know her father very well.
“He’s an incredible dancer and a great actor. But yeah, I don’t know him very well,” she said.
Doja Cat is known to have an estranged relationship with her father.
In 2021, she said “I felt confused, a little bit…t’s a little strange to see everybody else with their dad, and you didn’t even really have one,” to Rolling Stone.
Despite being estranged, the actor expressed that he was proud of his daughter.
“I’m so proud of her for what she has achieved… I’m not surprised, because it’s in the blood,” he said.
So, it is currently unclear what the relationship between Doja Cat and her father is right now.
