Robert Duvall, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, has died at the age of 95.

The Academy Award winner died peacefully at his home in Middleburg, Virginia, on Sunday.

Paid tribute

In a statement released by his public relations agency on behalf of his wife, Luciana, she paid tribute to the man she described as her “everything”.

“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything,” she said.

“For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented.”

Duvall enjoyed a remarkable six-decade career, becoming one of Hollywood’s most respected performers.

Iconic line

He starred as Tom Hagen opposite Marlon Brando in The Godfather, and delivered one of cinema’s most memorable lines in Apocalypse Now – “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the Vietnam War epic cemented his status as a screen legend.

Robert Duvall received six Oscar nominations during his career and won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1983 for his role as a washed-up country singer in Tender Mercies.

He leaves behind a body of work widely regarded as among the finest in American cinema.
