Nyati Reappointed Eskom Chair For Another Three Years
Cabinet has reappointed Dr Mteto Nyati as Eskom board chairperson for another three years, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced today, Friday.
Nyati’s new term will begin on 1 November 2026, after his current three-year term expires at the end of October.
Ramokgopa said the decision was aimed at providing continuity as Eskom moves into what government calls its “Eskom 2.0” phase, with a focus on a more competitive electricity market, grid expansion, new generation and long-term financial sustainability.
“If it ain’t broken, why fix it?” Ramokgopa said, explaining Cabinet’s decision to retain Nyati.
The reappointment comes after a significant improvement in Eskom’s electricity supply. South Africa has gone more than 490 days without load-shedding, according to the latest reports. Eskom also reported a second consecutive profitable financial year for the year ended 31 March 2026.
Ramokgopa said the next phase would require Eskom to adapt to a changing electricity market and reduce its reliance on repeated government bailouts and sustained double-digit tariff increases.
Nyati said his reappointment came with a responsibility to meet the expectations of South Africans, while Eskom Group CEO Dan Marokane welcomed the decision, saying it would provide leadership certainty as the utility pursues long-term sustainability and further reforms.
