Cape Town’s plan to launch a specialised Metro Police SWAT unit has sparked criticism from political opponents who say the City should focus more on development in high-crime communities.
The debate intensified after Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis shared a video showing one of the armoured vehicles expected to form part of the unit.
According to the Cape Argus, the new team is still being trained and is expected to launch later this year.
Critics question policing strategy
ActionSA MP Dereleen James said the use of armoured SWAT vehicles could further criminalise communities already struggling with violent crime.
She argued that the City should place greater emphasis on development rather than relying mainly on enforcement.
GOOD Party politician Brett Herron made a similar argument, saying areas with high murder rates had also experienced underinvestment.
He called for more spending on infrastructure, sports and recreation facilities, skills development and programmes aimed at giving young people alternatives to crime.
One Love Alliance’s Joseph Jacobs said he welcomed efforts to fight crime but wanted clarity on where the unit would operate, who it would serve and how it would function.
City says unit will support SAPS
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the SWAT team would be made up of Metro Police officers.
He said the unit would operate within existing legislation and constitutional rules governing municipal law enforcement.
Smith added that the training process was demanding and that further details would be announced closer to the launch.
The City says the unit will mainly support the South African Police Service and other municipal enforcement teams.
Focus on violent crime and unrest
According to Smith, the SWAT unit will be deployed in situations involving violent crime, social unrest and incidents requiring specialised intervention.
The City has not yet provided full operational details.
Critics remain unconvinced that specialised vehicles and additional enforcement alone will reduce crime in affected communities.
The planned unit is therefore likely to remain a political flashpoint as Cape Town prepares to roll it out later this year.
