Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why Itumeleng Khune and Zitha Kwinika were dropped from the team that won 2-0 over Royal AM in the league in Polokwane on Sunday.
Khune had been a regular first pick for Amakhosi in goals since returning from injury late last year but he conceded six goals in Chiefs’ last three games before Sunday’s win.
He was named on the bench behind Brandon Petersen and Kwinika made way for Siyabonga Ngezana.
Zwane says the changes weren’t because the players performed badly.
“When it comes to Itu and Kwinika, as I said earlier on, I said we have been playing very well and unfortunately when you look at the goals that we conceded, they were individual errors, not team mistakes, I don’t know if you understand what I’m saying,” he said when asked by iDiski Times about the duo.
“Those things, they do happen but we had to make changes here and there because we have a very, very big squad and give others players the opportunity as well to showcase their talent and they responded positively.
“But when you look at this game and many other games in terms of performance, no difference, the only difference today is the score-line.
“We managed to take our chances. Having said that, it’s not because they performed badly, no.
“If you look at Mduduzi [Shabalala], we missed Nkosinginphile Ngcobo due to injury and we decided to start with Mduduzi and last [week] you saw Sithebe came on.
“So we are creating that competition that everyone will want to show that hunger to go in there and compete and so far they have responded positively all of them.”
Chiefs return to action next Sunday when they will face TS Galaxy, who will be on a high after thrashing Golden Arrows 4-0.Story by Lethabo Kganyago (@KganyagoLee).
