Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has revealed that his club tried to add more players in January but moves “didn’t materialise”.
The Amakhosi only added one new player in January, striker Christian Saile Basomboli, with many fans left disappointed not more players were added – in particular after the sale of allrounder Njabulo Blom.
On the pitch, Chiefs started the year with successive defeats, but managed to halt their downward trend with a win over Royal AM before a goalless draw against TS Galaxy.
With many onlookers left wondering whether Chiefs did attempt to improve the squad, Zwane confirmed that some moves “didn’t materialise”.
“Actually we were just unfortunate. We were trying to bring in a few players, but it didn’t materialise,” he said on Monday.
“So we had to move on and focus on what we have in terms of playing personal.
“Yes, injuries are always going happen because football is a contact sport, but I wouldn’t want to look at the past and worry what about we could’ve done and what we didn’t do.
“We need to focus now on the next game and the remaining games of the season.”
With Chiefs only having slim mathematically chances to win the DStv Premiership, the Nedbank Cup is the club’s last chance to end their trophy drought in the competition.
Zwane insisted his team want to go all the way to the final, starting with a tough away trip against Maritzburg United.
“Game are coming thick and fast. Obviously this one is a cup game, it’s not going to be an easy one. The approach will be totally different, the mindset of the players,” he added.
“So I think they have been doing very well. We also looking forward to the game.

“When it comes to the cup, we always want to win every game, we don’t choose the game, whether cup games or league games [but] we want to go to the final and win it.”
