One of South Africa’s most loved culinary competitions, The Taste Master Junior has returned and promises to cook up a storm.

After having a successful debut season, The Taste Master Junior has recently returned to SABC 2, where local foodies are introduced to a new crop of young, talented bakers, all of whom are ready to expand their knowledge and test their creativity among the fiercest competition in their age group.

Earlier this year, Patience Stevens, the Managing Director of Cardova Productions, highlighted that after witnessing the success of season 1, returning for a second season was a no-brainer.

“The response to season 1 was phenomenal – from viewers, parents, and of course, the contestants themselves. It was inspiring, it was fun, and it showcased an incredible range of young talent. We can’t wait to do it all again!”

With the contestants being new to the show, one thing that remains constant is The Taste Master Junior’s criteria set by the judging panel. This year sees the return of the renowned chef and cookbook author, Zola Nene.

Having made several appearances on some of the country’s most loved television programmes, such as the award-winning breakfast show, Expresso, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, and The Great South African Bake Off, Zola knows all about the daunting feeling of cooking in front of the cameras, but remains ecstatic about the young talent that will be coming through.

“I am so excited to be back as a judge on The Taste Master Junior,” Zola says. “These young contestants remind us that food is about joy, curiosity, and sharing, and I cannot wait to encourage them as they find their voices through food.”

Fortunately, she will not be alone. Accompanying her on the show will be none other than baker and entrepreneur Fritz Schoon.

Fritz is well-known in culinary circles and is famous for his innovative eateries and products released under the SCHOON brand.

As is the case with his co-panelist, Zola, he too expressed excitement ahead of the new season.

“It is an incredible honour to be part of a platform that inspires young culinary talent. My focus here is not just to judge the final product, but to instill in these juniors the discipline of quality and the courage to find their unique creative voice. The passion they bring to the kitchen today is the foundation of South Africa’s food culture tomorrow,” he added.

Season 2 premiered on 7 October with repeats on Wednesdays at 1 pm and Sundays at 4 pm.
