Mamelodi Sundowns legend and national supporter’s coordinator Daniel Mudau reckons the club will soon not just dominate on the field of play but will be the most supported club in the country.
Sundowns are still a bit behind their first rivals, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, based on the stadium attendance and social media interactions. But their dominance in local football has seen them attract more supporters.
Downs are the most successful football club in the South African PSL era. They have 12 Premiership titles, while Chiefs and Pirates have four apiece.
“Let me tell you something when we started this thing, people were saying it’s only 12 of us. Now they say we are 57,” Mudau told FARPost at the clubs’ fans activation event at the University of Limpopo on Friday.
“But to be honest, Mamelodi Sundowns is the fastest growing team in South Africa. I am telling you if you look at Mamelodi Sundowns we don’t go to those who already made a decision on who they support.
“We go to the youth. We grow with them. I am telling you; you should look after 10 years and see Mamelodi Sundowns as the biggest supported team in South Africa,” said Mudau.
“You saw (against Kaizer Chiefs), we conquered in the field of play. We conquered the stands as well so that is Mamelodi Sundowns for you. Those other teams are big, but we are growing. It’s a strategy to say where we must look. As I said, we don’t look at someone who is older to try and convince them. We go to primary schools, high schools, and high learning institutions to give them the Mamelodi Sundowns and they grow with that.
Sundowns are in Polokwane ahead of their DStv Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.
