Why Chiefs and Pirates are ‘Wounded Lions’ right now

Kaizer Chiefs host Orlando Pirates in the long-awaited Soweto derby today, 28 February 2026, at the FNB Stadium.

Both Amakhosi and the Buccaneers are coming off two disappointing back-to-back results. The Glamour Boys fell to Stellenbosch FC, while the Sea Robbers allowed Mamelodi Sundowns to take three points off them in the tight title race.

WHAT TIME IS THE SOWETO DERBY?

The kick-off time for the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates showdown is set for 15:30, with Stadium Management SA (SAMS) advising fans to arrive as early as 13:00 to avoid new ticketing system and security delays.

It will be televised on PSL (Channel 202) and SABC 1. Mobile users can stream the action via the DStv Stream app or the SABC+.

WHY ARE KAIZER CHIEFS AND ORLAND PIRATES ARE WOUNDED?

Neither side has won any football games in the past two matches. Amakhosi first lost 2-1 to Zamalek SC to crash out of the CAF Confederation Cup group stages. The result was followed by a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership.

Orlando Pirates first lost 2-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership, before the shock Nedbank Cup last 16 game to Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) side Casric Stars on penalties after the game ended goalless at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

WHO HAS WON MORE DERBIES?

Since the first battle in 1970, Kaizer Chiefs have bagged more victories than Orlando Pirates, but the recent results in the past three seasons have in favour of the Buccaneers.
