DERICK HOUGAARD: FAMOUS MATCH TO RETIREMENT
IOL reports that the former Springbok flyhalf and Blue Bulls legend Derick Hougaard is popularly known for playing in the 2002 Currie Cup final as a 19-year-old against the Lions, where broke Naas Botha’s record for most points in a championship match.
Hougaard’s record still stands in South Africa’s premier domestic competition, 21 years later.
The publication adds that the 37-year-old’s rugby career was cut short, and his injuries forced him to call it quits on the rugby field.
Hougaard, who worked on SuperSport as a rugby commentator revealed on his Facebook account in August 2017 that he was fired for his comments on social media about South African rugby transformation.
He wrote: “Working for SuperSport and doing commentary, it came quite naturally. And the love for the work and brand was growing every week and working with absolute geniuses, legends and great people. A minister mailed SuperSport taking me off TV completely. I will always have a fair opinion and will stand by what will make South Africa a force in World Rugby again. It is a shame that it cost me my job.”

RUGBY LEGEND: RELATIONSHIPS
Brielfy reports that the rugby legend Derick Hougaard married Afrikaans singer Karlien van Jaarsveld in 2013, divorced in 2015 and together they have twin boys, Eliah and Daniël.
Hougaard made headlines in December 2018 when Jacaranda FM reported that his former wife revelead on social media that their twin boys went missing under Hougaard’s supervision.
The singer also shared that she was informed that her ex-husband was drunk at Jacaranda FM’s Carols by Candlelight at Loftus Versfeld during the festive season.
He began his relationship with another Afrikaans singer Nadine in 2018 after his divorce from the mother of his children and ex-wife.
However, in February 2022 Nadine took to her social media account and indicated that her relationship with Hougaard was over in a since-deleted post.
“Four years. Six months. 20 days. It’s over. Final.”
TshisaLIVE reported in June 2023 that the pair rekindled their relationship after the singer revealed on her Facebook account that visitors to his sickbed were strictly limited to close family and herself. This is after the former Springbok flyhalf was admitted to a Pretoria hospital after experiencing breathing problems.
The Afrikaans pop singer also took to her Facebook account in June to thank everyone for praying and supporting Hougaard, who was recently discharged from hospital.
