What Pitso Said About Tau Before Al Ahly Move

After Percy Tau lifted the CAF Champions League trophy with Al Ahly on Sunday evening, we recall the famous words by Pitso Mosimane before the Bafana Bafana winger joined the club.

Tau, 29, joined Al Ahly from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2021 and some criticised it as a step back.

However, the Bafana star lifted his fifth trophy since joining the Egyptian giants on Sunday after helping them to beat defending champions Wydad Athletic Club 3-2 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League final.

Tau was involved in 10 goals in 12 appearances in this season’s CAF Champions League – more than any other player and also scored in the first leg.

After he won the biggest trophy on the continent, let’s draw it back to Mosimane’s words before he joined Al Ahly, as the South African coach knew Tau had a lot more to give than suffer on the bench at Brighton.

“Percy is a strong man, he is like Messi. He has got so much to show you,” he told Cassper Nyovest in an InstagramLive talk at the time.

“Every week he has got something he can show. So let’s give him a chance to show. If we can pay him, Percy must come and show that he is the king of the jungle. So let him come.”

Overall, Tau has now won five trophies with Al Ahly, two Egyptian Super Cups, one Egyptian Cup, one CAF Super Cup and one CAF Champions League.

On Sunday, he became the first ever South African footballer to lift two CAF Champions League trophies.
