The development followed a dispute over whether the accused should be allowed to consult with their legal representatives after the proceedings were brought to an early close.

Judge Cassim Moosa subsequently clarified the position, ruling that the accused may consult with their counsel when court proceedings are adjourned early.

Tension after early adjournment

The Matlala matter has been closely followed as the accused face serious charges linked to an alleged attempted murder.

On Tuesday, 8 September 2026, proceedings were adjourned early, but the accused were reportedly prevented from consulting with their lawyers.

The situation resulted in tension after the court session, with the events captured on video.

The issue was subsequently addressed by Judge Cassim, who ruled that when proceedings are adjourned before the expected time, the accused should be permitted to consult with their counsel.

The ruling provides clarity on the accused’s access to legal representatives during periods when the court is no longer sitting.
