Richards Bay FC head coach Vasili Manousakis has likened the Natal Rich Boyz midfielder to the former Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise.

Manousakis was speaking after their DStv Premiership match against Maritzburg United on Friday night.

He sang praises of the young midfielder Mpho Mathebula, comparing him to the Bafana Bafana legend Modise.

‘Navigator’ and Manousakis worked together at Cape Town City when Richards Bay gaffer was assisting Benni McCarthy.

Mathebula recently returned from injury and had a spectacular showing against the Team of Choice.

“Mpho Mathebula is a genius, he is an absolute genius and a gem,” said Manousakis.

“He’s one of the finest for the season and there are many others in this team. But this kid is unbelievable.

“One of the most accomplished midfielders I’ve seen for a long time.

“And you got to remember I worked with Teko at Cape Town City. There’s a few elements of that inside him.

“Not just his technical ability but his ability to read the game. He’s phenomenal, I love that kid, all of them but this boy is very special.”

According to Manousakis, they have been struggling with the number six role, especially since the passing of Siphamandla Mtolo.

However, he feels that they slowly getting it right.

“The number six role is something that we’ve been struggling with,” he added.

“We cannot just get it settled. It’s Abel, and then he’s sent off and then Mtolo who was doing that job for us [passed away].

“But also Langa Mhlongo, he was fantastic. You know we’re talking about two kids here who are playing in the central midfield against experienced campaigners.

“So, there’s an exciting future ahead of us.”
