Unions stand firm Against Eskom’s latest wage offer

Eskom and its three recognised trade unions – NUM, NUMSA and Solidarity – wrapped up the third round of salary negotiations on Thursday, 25 May. All unions rejected the power utility’s latest offer.

Rejection of Eskom’s Revised Salary Offer

Eskom initially offered 3.75%, then 4.5%. The final revised offer was 5.25%. The final offer was rejected by all the unions. However, the parties agreed on the amendment of the Grievance and Disciplinary Procedures.

NUM and NUMSA’s current wage demands are 11 and 12%, respectively, while Solidarity wants 9.5%.

Fourth Round of Negotiations Scheduled

Wage negotiations traditionally take place over three three-day sessions. This year, the parties agreed to hold a fourth round of negotiations.

The fourth round of negotiations is set down for 13 and 14 June, and the parties believe there are prospects of reaching a settlement at the Central Bargaining Forum.

“Eskom is hopeful that it and the labour unions will find each other for the benefit of the company and the best interest of the country,” said the power utility in a statement.
