Tyla’s smash hit Water has made history by surpassing 1.2 billion streams on Spotify. This secures its legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest musical exports.

This achievement marks Tyla as the first female African act and the first solo African artist to reach this colossal milestone with a single.

TYLA’S ‘WATER’

South African sensation Tyla launched her song Water in July 2023, blending amapiano with R&B. With the song, she ignited a viral dance challenge that took social media by storm.

She first performed the track at the Giants of Africa Festival. Its infectious rhythm propelled it onto global charts, including the Billboard Hot 100.

Water also earned Tyla her first Grammy at the 66th Awards for Best African Music Performance in February 2024, according to GQ South Africa.

BREAKING STREAMING RECORDS

Tyla broke streaming records previously held by artists like Master KG and Hugh Masekela. She reinforced the world-class standard and creative innovation emerging from South Africa.

Her achievement shows that music born of local genres, especially amapiano, can resonate powerfully across continents.

‘WATER’ CERTIFIED PLATINUM

With Water certified quadruple platinum locally and having set social media ablaze with the #TylaWaterChallenge.

Tyla’s success story stands as a testament to the potential for South African artists to achieve global acclaim through hard work and originality.

TYLA STAYS BOOKED AND BUSY

Tyla has stayed busy performing at major international festivals, most recently electrifying crowds at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City, according to Glamour.

She is also preparing for her highly anticipated India debut at the Indian Sneaker Festival in December.

She continues to impress with her dynamic stage presence and energetic dance routines while teasing new music.

AFRICAN EXCELLENCE

Her 1.2 billion streams highlight the role of digital platforms in showcasing African excellence.

Spotify’s RADAR Africa and EQUAL Africa initiatives have played a key role in this journey, empowering emerging talent and exposing it to a global audience.
