The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed the deaths of two soldiers in a recent mortar attack in the troubled eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The attack, which took place on Tuesday, also left twenty other soldiers wounded. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of South African casualties in the region.

South African troops have been deployed in the DRC as part of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) force, which is assisting the Congolese government in quelling a rebellion.

The latest attack has raised concerns and calls for more transparency from the South African National Defence Union (SANDU) regarding the loss of life and injuries sustained by South African soldiers stationed in the DRC.

SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini provided updates on the condition of the injured soldiers. “Four members who were critically injured have been hospitalised, whilst the rest who suffered minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon,” Dlamini stated.

The families of the two soldiers who lost their lives have been informed, and procedures to bring their mortal remains back to South Africa are currently underway.

This is not the first time South African soldiers have suffered casualties in the DRC. In May, one soldier was killed, and in February, another two soldiers lost their lives in similar incidents.

These recurring attacks have led to increased scrutiny and demands for more information regarding the safety and security of South African troops deployed in the region.

The names of the deceased soldiers will be communicated in due course, according to SANDF. The ongoing conflict in the DRC remains a significant challenge for the international community, and the loss of South African lives underscores the dangers faced by peacekeeping forces in volatile regions.
