The legal proceedings against suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and City Manager Kagiso Lerutla have been delayed.
During a brief appearance at the Boksburg Magistrates Court, the matter was officially transferred to the Regional Court, with a new date set for June.
The charges stem from a 2019 incident in which the pair allegedly conspired to have an impostor appear in court on Lerutla’s behalf following a high-speed driving offence.
Following their arrests in April, the duo was granted bail of R30,000 each.
Defence solicitor Alphy Masenya confirmed that the legal team is now preparing for the trial phase, though they are still awaiting access to the full police docket.
Masenya noted that while the initial hurdle of securing bail has been cleared, the defence is now focused on addressing the specific nature of the allegations as the case moves forward.
