Madibeng Municipal Manager Quiet Kgatlha Survives Apparent Assassination Attempt
Madibeng Local Municipality Municipal Manager Quiet Kgatlha survived an apparent assassination attempt on Wednesday afternoon after gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle near the Zilkaatsnek Sasol garage.
According to preliminary information, the attack occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. when occupants of a grey Volkswagen Polo allegedly fired around 30 rounds from a high-calibre assault rifle at Kgatlha’s moving vehicle while pursuing him. Despite the intensity of the attack, Kgatlha survived. The full extent of his injuries and the damage to the vehicle has not yet been officially confirmed.
The motive for the attack remains unknown and is expected to form part of a police investigation.
The incident comes amid reports of an intensified anti-corruption drive within the municipality. According to information received, Kgatlha has been leading efforts to identify and address alleged corruption, financial misconduct and other irregularities involving certain municipal officials.
It is further alleged that the municipality has been preparing to institute criminal proceedings against several employees accused of unlawful conduct, including the alleged deliberate contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and other legislation governing public financial administration.
The timing of the shooting has prompted speculation about a possible connection between the attack and the municipality’s reported anti-corruption initiatives. However, there is currently no publicly available evidence linking the attempted assassination to those investigations, and any such connection remains speculative pending the outcome of official investigations.
The South African Police Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the identity of the attackers, the motive behind the attack, and whether it is connected to any ongoing municipal matters.
Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
