Transfer report: Orlando Pirates complete signing number SEVEN

Orlando Pirates have added what looks like a true Relebohile Mofokeng potential replacement in Matome Mmolai.

According to FARPost’s senior reporter Tshepo Rabothe, it is a done deal, subject to an official announcement.

MATOME MMOLAI JOINS ORLANDO PIRATES

“Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of exciting midfielder Matome Mmolai from Leicesterford City FC to further bolster their squad for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, FARPost has been informed,” Rabothe said.

“The skilful midfielder has penned a deal with Pirates and will be part of the squad undergoing routine medicals this week before kick-starting pre-season training,” Rabothe added.

WHO IS MATOME MMOLAI?

Mmolai hails from Alexandra, Johannesburg. The 23-year-old first attracted attention while starring for Dondol Stars in the ABC Motsepe League. His technical quality and ability to dictate play quickly marked him out as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.

The midfielder earned his first major opportunity when he joined JDR Stars for the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign. He made his professional debut in August 2024 before announcing himself with a winning goal against the University of Pretoria just a month later. His performances for the Hammer Boyz established him as one of the division’s standout talents.

His rapid rise soon attracted interest from top-flight clubs. TS Galaxy signed him last term but a legal dispute saw him play for Leicesterford City FC who bought the status of Mmolai’s former club JDR Stars. Despite the setbacks, Mmolai continued to impress whenever given the opportunity, showcasing his creativity, close control and tactical intelligence.

Perhaps most intriguingly for Orlando Pirates, Mmolai possesses a playing style that has drawn comparisons with Relebohile Mofokeng. His explosive dribbling, confidence in one-on-one situations and ability to unlock defences make him a natural fit for the Buccaneers’ attacking philosophy.

With Mofokeng widely tipped for a move abroad, Mmolai is viewed as a player capable of stepping into a similar creative role.
