Da Cruz backs Vilakazi as Chiefs’ new era begins

Fernando Da Cruz has named his first Kaizer Chiefs starting line-up, handing young star Mfundo Vilakazi a starting berth as the French coach begins his reign at Amakhosi.

Da Cruz takes charge of his first competitive match when Chiefs face Betway Premiership newcomers Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening. The Frenchman appears determined to give Vilakazi a bigger role this season, with the talented youngster earning a place in the starting XI alongside Ethan Chislett as Amakhosi look to begin the campaign with a victory.

Kruger United coach Abram Mongoya has admitted he would have picked Chiefs as his side’s first opponents if given the opportunity. “A big yes because it has a lot of advantages when we looked at it,” Mongoya said at the PSL season launch. “It’s an exciting fixture for the supporters. They’ve been longing for something like this. We’ve only had TS Galaxy bringing top-flight football to our province, so this is a great opportunity for our players to showcase their talent.”

Mongoya also believes facing Chiefs early in the season could benefit his side. “Getting a Chiefs team while the new coaches are still settling in is the perfect situation. Hopefully it goes our way.” He added that Kruger United’s technical team had thoroughly studied Chiefs during their pre-season tour of Spain.

Kaizer Chiefs Starting XI: Brandon Petersen (captain), Monyane, Kwinika, Miguel, Frosler, Maboe, Ndlovu, Chislett, Da Silva, Baartman, Vilakazi.

Substitutes: Leaner, Solomons, Nkgwesa, Moloisane, Mthethwa, Ngcobo, Mmodi, Ighodaro, Duba.
