  • Former ANC NEC member and veteran politician Tony Yengeni has officially joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party as its second Deputy President.
  • Yengeni was introduced by MK Party leader Jacob Zuma and will oversee day-to-day party affairs.
  • His appointment allows co-Deputy President John Hlophe to focus on the party’s parliamentary work.

Former African National Congress (ANC) heavyweight Tony Yengeni has been named the second Deputy President of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Yengeni, who was a long-serving member of the ANC and a past member of its powerful National Executive Committee (NEC), was introduced by MK Party leader Jacob Zuma at a media briefing at the party’s provincial office in Durban on Thursday afternoon.

The veteran politician will primarily focus on running party affairs, allowing the party’s original Deputy President, former Judge President John Hlophe, to concentrate on his parliamentary duties.

Yengeni is known for his decades of political activity within the anti-apartheid and post-apartheid ANC structures, although his career was also marked by a 2006 conviction for fraud stemming from the Arms Deal investigation.

His decision to join Zuma’s breakaway faction marks a major shift in South African political allegiances.
