Tlhopi Motsepe: Sundowns were right to let go of Rulani

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopane “Tlhopi” Motsepe believes the club made the right decision to part ways with coach Rulani Mokwena in 2024.

This was after Sundowns again failed in their mission to win the CAF Champions League, and Motsepe feels they need change to get past that hurdle.

In an interview with Robert Marawa, Motsepe admitted that Mokwena took with him some lessons from his time with Sundowns.

He believes every team that Mokwena has coached after Sundowns, he took some valuable lessons with him to be a successful mentor.

Motsepe said everyone wishes Mokwena and the rest of the South African coaches on the continent the best, but just not against Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns are the CAF Champions League defending champions having lifted the trophy last season when they beat AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate.

TLHOPI MOTSEPE FEELS SUNDOWNS MADE THE RIGHT DECISION BY PARTING WAYS WITH RULANI

“It was [the right decision to let go of Rulani at the time], I think in hindsight, when coach Rulani went Wydad, he had lessons that he had learned at Sundowns that he takes there,” said Motsepe.

“When he goes to MC Alger, he had lessons he learned from Pirates, Sundowns and Wydad and he took them there.

“I’m sure he’s going to be successful there. He seems to have gotten off to a good start, and congratulations to him.

“And again, we say, we want to them to be successful as South African coaches, just not against Sundowns in the Champions League,” added Motsepe.

DO YOU ALSO THINK THIS WAS THE RIGHT DECISION?
