Tinkler Wants Mayo To Score Against Chiefs & Win The Golden Boot

With Khanyisa Mayo having joined Peter Shalulile on the top of the goal-scoring charts, Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has said his striker has an opportunity to go and win the golden boot when City take on Kaizer Chiefs in their final DStv Premiership fixture next weekend.

Mayo scored a brace in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Richards Bay to join Shalulile on 12 goals. The Namibian could get a first opportunity to increase the tally mid-week when Mamelodi Sundowns play Maritzburg United.

But Mayo will then have his chance when City travel to Chiefs on the weekend where they will battle it out for fourth place.

City are currently fifth, two points behind Chiefs, and a win would see them jump above the Amakhosi and secure a home last-eight game in next season’s MTN8.

Tinkler says it is great to have those extra motivating factors going into their last game of the season, and he hopes Mayo goes out and wins the award, while also hoping he wasn’t upset that he took him off just after he scored his second.

“Ja, definitely,” Tinkler replied to iDiski Times’ question about those factors.

“Obviously, he might be a little bit upset that I took him [off] when I did. But, just before he scored, we had already made that choice to throw on some fresh legs because you could see the fatigue coming in.

“But then he got the second and I thought ‘mmm, do I leave him’?

“But ja, he’s got an opportunity now to go in the last game and win it on his own, hopefully.”
