Tinkler Angry After Cape Derby Implosion

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler was furious after his side squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 in the Cape Derby.

The Cape Derby has been dominated by Stellenbosch FC in recent years but for 40 minutes in the first half everybody thought that’s the end of their dominance after City were 2-0 up.

Things, however, quickly changed as Stellies came back from 2-0 down to claim all three points at a rocking Danie Craven Stadium on Friday.

After the match, Tinkler was furious with his side and insisted that it was their worst defensive display this season.

“I don’t really have any [answer] to be honest. I think defensively we were atrocious. That’s where it started and that’s where it ended,” he told journalists present.

“I don’t think we were outsmarted. I don’t think their tactics worked against us. We knew exactly what game they were going to play and we just didn’t deal with the long balls and for that reason, we got punished.

“So this is probably by far our worst defensive display this season and that angers me, because we spoke about in the Derby first and foremost the intensity the aggression has to be there. We didn’t show it, they did.

“We spoke about having to win our duals. We didn’t do that either. So that in itself painted the picture even though we managed to get a two-goal lead and then you throw it away by conceding a stupid, stupid goal that you could have avoided had you just cleared your lines and then you come in at half-time 2-0 up and the game is under control.

“But instead you come in and it’s 2-1 and you’ve given them hope and that’s extremely frustrating for me because it’s something that I’ve raised every single game that we’ve conceded in the dying minutes.

“I’ve spoken about game management and we obviously haven’t followed the instructions so I’m quite irritated.”
