Tinkler addresses Nodada to Downs issue

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has addressed the Thabo Nodada transfer issue following reports that the midfielder is set for a switch.

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly interested in signing the Bafana Bafana international this transfer window.

The former Black Aces midfield maestro played a significant role in helping the Citizens finish second in the DStv Premiership the previous term, which led to their qualification for the CAF Champions League.

In the meantime, Tinkler was keen to stress he remains a City player.

“No one has left the club. We haven’t sold any player, and we are not planning on selling anyone,” the 51-year-old told the media.

“We have kept the squad exactly what it was last season. And those rumours you’re talking about, none of them is official. Nothing has landed on my boss’ desk. So, all of these are just rumours and speculations bred by the media or maybe the agent.”

Tinkler also explained why his side is not active in the transfer market due to the fact that they made a lot of changes in December 2021.

“For me, we made a lot of changes in December. You know, we let go of seven players and brought in a whole bunch of new faces. Obviously, we not going to go deep in the transfer window this season.  We only looking to strengthen certain areas and boost the squad slightly to be stronger than it was last season,” he added.

“We carried a 24-man squad last season, but this term, we are looking to have a 26-man squad with the possibility of adding one more to make it 27 as we are not a firm believer in a massive squad because it becomes hard to manage it.”

The Cape side has bolstered their squad with the acquisition of midfielder Jordan Bender and highly-rated defender Marc van Heerden from Orlando City and neighbours Stellenbosch, respectively.

City will play their first league match against the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at home on Friday, 5 August 2022.
