Tiger Brands extends canning unit operation

Published

The country’s largest food producer Tiger Brands says it will extend operations of its fruit canning business for a further season to save jobs.

The Ashton-based factory in the Western Cape faces closure as the company looks for possible buyers for the unit. However, the company says any transaction will not be processed in time ahead of the forthcoming season’s crop.

Tiger Brands has cited various cost pressures as reasons to close the factory. Up to 250 full-time workers, and more than 4,000 seasonal workers, will be impacted should the unit close.

Agricultural group AgriSA says it held a recent meeting between farmers, unions, and the Industrial Development Corporation over the future of the factory.
