Parents and pupils of Bantuvukani Primary School Lamontville in Durban have shut doors in protest over the unsatisfactory condition of the toilets at the school and other infrastructures.

Thami Radebe SGB Deputy Chairperson said that the children are forced to go outside when they need the toilet because their facilities are no longer safe to use.

“This whole building is smelling as learners are forced to use outdoor area to relive themselves as the school toilets have been lockdown because they were discovered to be dangerous for the learners,” he said.

Radebe further stated that the department brought in 6 mobile toilets which were not enough to accommodate all the learners in the school.

“In 2018 some toilets were damaged as they were fixing sewage storms and they were never rebuild. We then received 6 mobile toilets for enrollment of 1100 learners which didnt make sense,” said Radebe.

Some of the other complaints that have been raised include a lack of doors and windows at the school. Pupils have also said that the lack of electricity is a major concern.
