Taxi Driver Arrested For Drunk Driving And Overloading Scholar Transport Vehicle

In a recent transport safety operation in Mitchells Plain, Eastern Cape, a taxi driver has been arrested for alleged drunk driving and overloading his scholar transport vehicle. The operation, conducted by traffic police, aimed to inspect transport operators in the area.

Not only was the taxi driver apprehended, but several private vehicles that were transporting children to school were also impounded for lacking operating licenses.

This crackdown comes after a tragic incident in May 2023, where six children lost their lives in a car crash. The bakkie they were travelling in rolled multiple times and collided with a traffic light along AZ Berman Drive.

The driver responsible, a 55-year-old man, was arrested for culpable homicide, and his case is currently ongoing in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court.

Western Cape Mobility MEC Ricardo Mackenzie expressed his zero-tolerance for driver recklessness, stating, “Sadly, what we found this morning already, a driver has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

“So, our officers are taking those kids to nine different schools.” He further emphasized that enforcement operations would continue throughout 2024 to ensure the safety of schoolchildren.
