SuperSport opt against signing Mahlambi

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Phakamani Mahlambi’s search for a club looks set to be prolonged after SuperSport United opted against signing him.

FARPost has it in good authority that Mahlambi has stopped training with the club where he was being assessed by head coach Gavin Hunt with the hope of earning a contract.

The 58-year-old coach is a big admirer of the player, but indications are that he didn’t do enough at training to convince the Matsatsantsa hierarchy.

“Mahlambi has stopped training with the club. It looks like he won’t be signed because there are doubts around him, and more than anything, they feel like he didn’t do enough to be offered a contract, so he stopped training with the team,” a source told FARPost.

The 24-year-old came through the Wits development structures, where Hunt promoted him after an impressive run in the Multichoice Diski Challenge, now known as DStv Diski Challenge.

His heroics prompted an interest in his signature from local clubs and on the African continent. Eventually, Egyptian giants Al Ahly won the race for his services in 2016.

However, the move didn’t pan out well, as he was frozen out of the team for the longest time.

The former Bafana Bafana international notched a move back to the PSL a year later with the Brazilians coached by Pitso Mosimane.

The speedy attacker made 27 appearances for the 2016 CAF Champions League winners in all competitions scoring on six occasions.

He had a dip in form with the Chloorkop-based side, and he was sent out on loan at AmaZulu and Chippa United in the past two seasons but failed to make any impression which led to Bafana Ba Style not renewing his contract.

Meanwhile, a well-placed source has shed some light on former Orlando Pirates Wayde Jooste’s situation at SuperSport

“Currently, Wayde Jooste is the only player not contracted and training with the team. If all goes well, he might get a deal,” added the source.
