Sundowns Trounce Belouizdad To Book Their Place In CAFCL Semis

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their place in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League with a 6-2 aggregate win over Algerian champions Chabab Belouizdad.

Sundowns will face Wydad in the last four now after a second leg that proved a mere formality for their progress from the quarter-finals.

It appears the DStv Premiership champions exercised the demons of the last three seasons where they fell at this stage consecutively.

After the 4-1 drubbing over Belouizdad at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, the visitors were the ones who took the lead through captain Sofiane Bouchar midway through the first half.

It offered a glimmer of hope for their chances but Sundowns kept their composure and were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Themba Zwane leveled matters on the day on the brink of halftime.

A slick build-up leading to a quick one-two with Khuliso Mudau sent him in through on goal and he made no mistake beating goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz.

In the second half, it appeared as a half-time team talk from Rulani Mokwena put Masadawana into another gear and they came out guns blazing with Mudau setting up Thapelo Morena to put them into the lead and 6-2 on aggregate.

The convincing win reaffirms Sundowns’ tag as favourites for the 2022/23 Champions League crown as they book their place against the reigning champions Wydad in the next stage of the competition.
