Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United have announced their starting line-ups for this evening’s DStv Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
In a night that promises mixed emotions, Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena will lift his first-ever league title as sole head coach.
The Tshwane giants are coming into this game with little pressure after securing the league title a month ago with seven games to spare, and Mokwena’s side will be crowned DStv Premiership champions for the seventh successive time.
However, they are still chasing their own record of 71 points from 2015/16 and could go one point better with a win tonight.
Meanwhile, Maritzburg coach Fadlu Davids is trying to save the Team of Choice from the axe. The team from eMgungundlovu needs all three points and hope that Chippa United or Marumo Gallants won’t win in their last game of the season on Saturday.
A draw would give United a slim chance of survival, as it would put them one point ahead of Chippa and Gallants, whom they are currently equal with on 29 points, but are behind on goal difference. If they would indeed manage to hold Downs to a draw, they will have to pray that Chippa or Gallants lose their last game of the season.
Even a defeat tonight, would not confirm Maritzburg’s relegation, as Chippa, who only have a one-goal better goal difference, could potentially lose by a bigger margin against Golden Arrows on Saturday.
The last time Maritzburg United defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match in Pretoria was 11 years ago. They will have to do the unthinkable this evening.
Here is how they line up:
Sundowns XI: D.Onyango, Mashego, Kekana, Lebusa, Coetzee, Zungu, Maboe, Maema, Mabena, Ralani, Sirino
