It has been a quiet start to the transfer window for Mamelodi Sundowns. However, they now appear to be closing in on their first major addition ahead of the new season.

The Betway Premiership champions are believed to have made significant progress in their pursuit of the 24-year-old winger Antonio van Wyk, with discussions between them and Austrian club SV Ried advancing.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS AND SV RIED TALKS GAIN MOMENTUM

A January attempt to bring the former Stellenbosch FC winger to Chloorkop stalled after the clubs failed to find common ground.

According to SABC Sports’ top reporter Mazola Molefe, negotiations have since taken a more positive turn.

Molefe has revealed that several details still need to be resolved. Indications are that all parties remain engaged as they work towards a potential agreement

WHO IS ANTONIO VAN WYK?

Hailing from Cape Town’s Belhar, van Wyk began his football journey at the renowned Ubuntu Football Academy. He developed his technical ability and attacking flair under coaches like Moritz Kossmann and Casey Botha. His impressive progress earned him a move to Stellenbosch FC, initially featuring for the club’s reserve side.

Van Wyk played a key role in Stellenbosch’s DStv Diski Challenge and Premier League Next Generation Cup championship in 2022. The performances paved the way for his promotion to the senior team by coach Steve Barker.

He went on to make 77 appearances for the Cape Winelands outfit, helping them win the 2023 Carling Knockout and earning selection for South Africa’s COSAFA Cup squads.

In September 2024, the winger moved to Austrian side SV Ried, where he reunited with former mentor Kossmann. He quickly adapted to European football and played an important role in the club’s promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga.

His consistent performances in the top flight established him as one of Ried’s key attacking players, leading to a contract extension and attracting interest from Sundowns.
