Stellies To Release Five More After Robertson

Stellenbosch FC are preparing an off-season overhaul with five more senior players set to be released at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Steve Barker’s outfit has enjoyed an impressive campaign thus far after narrowly avoiding relegation last season and could still secure a spot in the top-four, as they sit sixth in the league, five points off second-placed Royal AM.

The club has made it known that CAF Football is part of their long-term ambitions and in a bid to develop their squad further several of their experienced players will now be released to make way for younger talent.

Alan Robertson (28) was already released earlier this month and he is set to be followed by Robyn Johannes (35), Granwald Scott (34), Nathan Sinkala (31) and Sibusiso Mthethwa (30) when their contracts expire in July.

Mark van Heerden (34) has also been informed that he will be released however, there’s an outside chance that he could be retained given his impressive form of late in the first eleven.

Two other forward’s in the squad also look likely to be cut but the final decision from the technical team will be decided by their performances in the last eight games of the season.

Stellies have fielded the most players under the age of 23 and 21 this season of all the 16 clubs in the South African top-flight with Barker handing several academy graduates their first-team debuts.
