  • Heavy rainfall and flooding continue to affect Limpopo and Mpumalanga, disrupting essential services and transport.
  • SAWS has issued a Red Level 10 warning as the risk of widespread flooding remains critically high.
  • Improved weather conditions are expected from 20 January 2026.

Improved weather conditions are expected from 20 January 2026, as heavy rainfall and flooding continue to batter the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The adverse weather conditions in the provinces have disrupted essential services, including the first day of schooling, with public transport unable to access certain roads.

Flights travelling to and from Hoedspruit Airport have also been suspended.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says the risk of flooding remains high due to very high amounts of rainfall accumulated over the past few days.

“The expectation of further heavy rainfall means the risk of widespread flooding remains critically high. As a result, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Red Level 10 Warning for Disruptive Rainfall for areas most at risk,” said SAWS spokesperson Lehlohonolo Thobela.

Potential impacts of these weather conditions include danger to life due to fast-flowing rivers and streams, widespread damage to settlements, property and critical infrastructure, displacement of communities, and disruption to essential services.

“This Red Level 10 Warning remains applicable while conditions continue to pose a severe risk to life, livelihoods and infrastructure,” Thobela added.

SAWS urges residents in affected areas to:

      •     Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and rivers

      •     Move to higher ground if flooding occurs

      •     Follow instructions from local authorities and disaster management teams

      •     Monitor official SAWS weather updates and warnings

SAWS continues to closely monitor the evolving situation and will provide updated forecasts and warnings as necessary.
