Tyla triumphed in the Best African Music Performance category for her chart-topping single, “Water.”
The internationally acclaimed star faced stiff competition from some of Africa’s most prominent musicians, including Ayra Starr, Olamide, Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, and fellow South African artist Musa Keys.

Expressing her astonishment during the acceptance speech, the 22-year-old star remarked;
“This is crazy, I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old. If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla, I’m from South Africa. Last year, God decided to change my whole life, so thank you very much to God and my family. I know my mother is crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category. It’s so important, and I know I’m forgetting something, but I won a Grammy.”
