The South African Weather Service says the biting cold weather experienced in parts of KwaZulu-Natal is only expected to subside by Thursday.

“Tomorrow, there is still a chance of summer rain, isolated to scattered conditions, but it does clear over the southern parts during the course of the day and then only by Thursday we’ll see an improvement in terms of the temperatures over the province,” says forecaster Thandiwe Gumede.

Gumede says two level two warnings have been issued for disruptive rain, which could lead to localised flooding.

“Areas over the eastern parts as well as the northern parts of the province is expecting an 80 percent chance. The remainder of the province is expecting a 60% chance.

“We are expecting our temperatures to drop quite significantly across the province, but areas particularly adjacent to the Berg will feel those colds to very cold conditions, that will include areas like Kokstad, Underberg, Giant’s Castle proceeding all the way along the northern part of Lesotho.”

There’s also a level 2 warning for disruptive snowfall leading to icy roads and railway lines expected over the south-western high grounds of KZN on Tuesday
