Healthy, well-groomed toenails can make your feet look instantly more polished, but good toenail care is about more than aesthetics.
A few simple habits can help prevent fungal infections, ingrown nails and everyday damage.

Trim toenails the right way
Keep toenails clean and trimmed, cutting them straight across rather than rounding the corners. Healthline states that this can reduce the risk of ingrown toenails.
Use a proper toenail clipper and smooth any sharp edges gently with a nail file. Avoid cutting the nails too short, as this can irritate the surrounding skin.
Keep feet clean and dry
According to Podhills Podiatry, warm, damp conditions can encourage fungal growth, so wash your feet regularly and dry them thoroughly – particularly between the toes.
Change into a clean pair of socks every day, and sooner if your feet become sweaty. Breathable footwear can also help reduce moisture.
Don’t ignore your shoes
Give shoes time to dry between wears, particularly after exercise or on hot days. In communal showers, swimming-pool areas and gym changing rooms, wear flip-flops or shower sandals to reduce exposure to fungi. Avoid sharing shoes, towels or nail-grooming tools.

Be careful with pedicures
A pedicure can leave toenails looking neat, but hygiene matters. Choose a salon that properly cleans and disinfects its tools and foot baths between clients.
Avoid having your cuticles aggressively cut or pushed back, as they help protect against infection.
Know when to get help
Watch for persistent changes such as thickening, crumbling, unusual discolouration, splitting or lifting of the nail.
These can be signs of a fungal infection, although other nail conditions can look similar. If changes persist, consult a healthcare professional rather than simply covering them with polish.
With consistent care, keeping your toenails healthy and attractive can be a simple part of your everyday self-care routine.
