  • Dion George has cancelled his membership and resigned as an MP and federal finance chair after 30 years with the party.
  • George claims leader John Steenhuisen is compromised by financial vulnerabilities, leading to the party’s “capture” by the ANC.
  • The DA maintains George resigned to avoid a legal commission regarding alleged staff salary inflation and the misuse of ministerial resources.

Long-serving Democratic Alliance (DA) member Dion George has resigned from the party and Parliament, claiming the organisation has been “captured” by the ANC and criminal interests. George made the announcement in an exclusive live interview on eNCA on Thursday.

George, who joined the party in 1995 and served as federal finance chairperson, told eNCA that his position had become “intolerable” under the leadership of John Steenhuisen.

George alleged that Steenhuisen’s personal financial vulnerabilities have left the party “muzzled” and unable to act in the national interest.

He further criticised the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) economic performance, warning that the DA’s failure to provide an “uncaptured voice” threatens South African democracy.

The DA confirmed the resignation but expressed regret that George stepped down before facing the Federal Legal Commission.

The party is currently investigating allegations against George involving unjustified salary increases for his staff at the taxpayers’ expense and the misuse of departmental information for internal party business.
