A security guard was injured during a cash-in-transit robbery in Thulamahashe, Mpumalanga, on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Hawks, the incident occurred at approximately 4.05 pm when a Fidelity Security Services armoured vehicle was transporting money from retail outlets around Thulamahashe to a depot. The vehicle was rammed by a silver Mercedes-Benz, initiating a well-coordinated attack.

The escort vehicle, a Toyota Hilux bakkie, was targeted by two VW Polos. The assailants shot and injured the driver, who was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

During the assault, the attackers seized two rifles from the security personnel. The two Polo vehicles then pursued the armoured vehicle, firing at it until it was forced to stop.

Once the armoured vehicle was immobilized, the suspects coerced the driver and the crew out of the vehicle and pushed them into nearby bushes. The crew’s firearms were also confiscated.

The Hawks spokesperson, Capt. Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, reported that around 20 suspects, all wearing balaclavas, gloves, and bulletproof vests, attacked the vehicle. The assailants used explosives to blow up the armoured vehicle, making off with an unspecified amount of money.

Following the robbery, members of the community descended on the crime scene, looting the remaining money scattered about.

The Hawks have urged the public to avoid contaminating the crime scene, as undetonated explosives may still pose a danger. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact W/O Albert de Lange at 071 481 2815. All information will be treated with confidentiality.
