SANTACO assures Gauteng commuters of normal taxi operations

- SANTACO has confirmed that taxi operations across Gauteng will continue as normal, except in Ekurhuleni where discussions are still ongoing.
- Commuters in the East Rand were left stranded on Thursday after taxis halted operations over vehicle impoundment concerns.
- The council apologised for the disruption and said it is engaging government to resolve the matter.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has assured commuters that taxi operations across Gauteng will continue as normal, except in the City of Ekurhuleni where discussions are still underway.
On Thursday afternoon, commuters in the East Rand were left stranded after taxis halted operations in response to concerns over vehicle impoundments.
In a statement, SANTACO apologised for the disruption and clarified that there will be no province-wide shutdown.
“We regret the inconvenience caused to commuters who were left stranded, and the anxiety created among the broader public due to reports of a possible province-wide shutdown. We wish to make it clear that there will be no province-wide protest or suspension of services in Gauteng tomorrow. Commuters across the province can continue to rely on normal taxi operations,” the council said.
SANTACO confirmed that its provincial and national leadership remain in constructive dialogue to resolve outstanding matters in Ekurhuleni.
The council is also in ongoing talks with both the Gauteng Provincial Government and the National Transport Ministry to ensure the issues are resolved speedily and amicably.
An update on taxi services in Ekurhuleni will be communicated once a final decision is made.
