The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirmed that a South African soldier died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Sunday, 5 February.

SANDF SOLDIER KILLED IN DRC
On Sunday, the soldier was killed when an Oryx helicopter was fired upon in Goma, DRC. The helicopter pilot was also injured in the attack but managed to land the aircraft safely at Goma Airport.
The South African military said it is in the process of informing the family members of the soldiers involved about the incident. Further details will be released in due course.
“The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Miss Thandi Modise; the Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr Thabang Makwetla; the Acting Secretary for Defence, Dr Thobekile Gameded and the Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya express their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wish the wounded soldier a speedy recovery,” read a statement.
SANDF members have been deployed in the DRC since 2001 as part of a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operation – the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO)
