Orlando Pirates star winger Monnapule Saleng has been named Vodacom Fans’ Player of the Season.
Saleng, who was on loan to Moroka Swallows in the 2021/22 season, was at his best last campaign, scoring 15 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions, along with eight assists in the DStv Premiership.
He helped the Buccaneers win two cup trophies – the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, and finished second in the DStv Premiership and qualified for the CAF Champions League.
Saleng scored the winning goal in the MTN8 final, sending a dipping free-kick into the back of the net against AmaZulu in Durban in November last year.
Based on the voting, the top five contenders came down to Saleng, Miguel Timm, Vincent Pule, Thembinkosi Lorch and Paseka Mako.
But Saleng was crowned as the Vodacom Fans’ Player of the Season after securing an overwhelming 80% of the fans’ votes.
Saleng had an incredible season, as he repaid coach Jose Riveiro’s faith in him and gave the fans everything they asked for. And now he has one more award to crown a phenomenal season as the true fan favourite.
“I’m extremely grateful to the fans for this award and their support of my performances,” said Saleng.
“I wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without the support of my teammates and coach Jose’s faith in me.
“Individual awards are always an honour, but they are the result of my primary focus which is to just help my team wherever I can and add value whenever I’m on the field with my teammates.”
Saleng is up and running yet again with Pirates and it looks like another good season is on the offing for him. He curled in a super strike as the Soweto giants routed Royal AM 4-2 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.
One lucky fan, who was part of the voting, won an OPPO smartphone courtesy of Vodacom.
