Saleng – I Want To Do Even Better Next Season

If you thought Monnapule Saleng was a one-hit wonder, better think again because his intention is to keep the consistency.

The star winger is someone who is a huge believer in Jesus, saying all he achieved this season was not going to be possible without the man above.

Saleng was named, in his first season with Pirates after spending last term on loan at Swallows, the Players’ Player of the Season and also the MTN8 Last Man Standing at Sunday night’s awards.

The 25-year-old featured in 30 matches in all competitions in the 2022/23 season, scoring 15 goals along with 11 assists in the process for Pirates.

One of those assists came in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final, when he set up the much- maligned Terrence Dzvukamanja to steer home the winner of the match against Sekhukhune United at Loftus Stadium.

Saleng, for his effort, was named Man of the Match. Pirates won the cup double this season, having also earlier claimed the MTN8 title in November, where Saleng scored the winner in the final in Durban. Saleng was also involved in all three goals as Pirates ruthlessly crushed Mamelodi

Sundowns 3-0 in the second leg of their semi-final in the Wafa Wafa Cup in Polokwane. After Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final, Saleng at first wasn’t willing to talk to the media but later he opened up to iDiski Times journalist Robin-Duke Madlala and others, who were waiting for him to finish the celebrations in the dressing room and shower at Loftus Stadium.

This was after all the other journalists had left the venue, as there was no sign of a mixed zone.

“I’ll maintain it because I’m a hard worker and I won’t relax since I have won this, l’ll have to work extra more,” said Saleng.

“I just want to work and maybe a lot of my stats because next season I want to improve it,” said Saleng.

Saleng was involved in three goals when Pirates beat AmaZulu 4-0 two weeks ago and assisted in the goal that clinched the Nedbank Cup trophy against Sekhukhune United on Saturday.

“I have to thank the man above, maybe it was my time,” added Saleng.

“There was also my hard work, extra training helped me a lot. Other things started from training and then to the games.

“You talk about the AmaZulu game, the free kick (MTN8 final). When it comes to goals, I’m someone who loves scoring goals.

“You remember even in the days of Free State Stars (in the Motsepe Foundation Championship in 2020/21), I was the top goal scorer in the league with (13) and even when I was at Orbit College in North West, (amateur side).

“As much as I’m a winger, but I love scoring, especially when I’m inside the box, I like to score. And I think that is why things are happening the way they are because I’m hungry.”
